Behind the mask.
Strong leadership isn't inherited. It's earned — and I have the scars to prove it.
I didn't write this book because leadership was easy or welcoming. I wrote it because I spent most of my career carrying responsibility before I had permission, making decisions without a safety net, and earning authority through outcomes — not optics.
I was called bossy before I understood it was a compliment. I was told I was too emotional, too aggressive, too much — and I spent years trying to sand those edges down. Then I realized: those edges were the point.
What I've learned — through three decades in hospitality and hospitality tech, through building teams and navigating politics and making calls no one wanted to make — is that leadership is not a personality trait. It's not confidence. It's not charisma. It's not inherited. It's earned.
I built Built, Not Born for women who didn't feel safe waiting to be ready. Who learned leadership the only way it actually sticks — by doing the work before they were sure it would work. That is me. And it might be you, too.
Thirty-plus years in leadership. Author. Founder. Keynote speaker. Executive advisor. Breadwinner. Mom of two fierce daughters. Wife of thirty-seven years. And still, some days, a work in progress. That's the point.

"Michelle took the hits that many of us are still ducking. She said the things that others were too afraid to say. And in doing so, she cleared a path for women in business to have a little more room, a little more agency, and a little more truth."
